The Book of the Law

The Book of the Law: Liber Al Vel Legis was written by Aleister Crowley in just three days in 1904. When you consider that this impressive hardback edition runs to around 160 pages, that three day period seems remarkably short, but Crowley didn’t claim to have come up with the content all by himself. What he did claim was that he simply wrote down a ‘transmission’ that he received.

The Book of the Law is that transmission, and it is widely viewed as the essential foundation for all that Crowley did afterwards. That makes this book an essential text for anyone who wants to follow in the footsteps of the world-famous occultist.

This is a beautiful edition that was published to celebrate the 100th anniversary of The Book of the Law making its first appearance. Whilst it isn’t always an easy read, it isn’t meant to be. This is a text to study and refer to again and again, and which becomes more illuminating with every visit. If you buy just one book by Aleister Crowley in your lifetime, this would be a good choice, but few people who have studied it seriously can resist continuing to study the rest of his works.

Key Quote: ‘Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.’
